The Inside Story: Gut Health and Hormones

Updated: Aug 13

What will you rate your GUT health?

You’ve probably seen or heard the term gut microbiome. It’s that mix of good and bad bacteria in your gut that plays a big role in your overall health.

Here’s something cool: your gut microbiota directly affects your hormones. A special group of bacteria called the estrobolome helps break down and remove estrogen, in other words it detoxes your body from the excess estrogen. Plus, a balanced gut reduces inflammation and supports stable blood sugar levels (my speciality), which are crucial for hormone health. When your gut is in good shape, your body absorbs nutrients better, helping to restore hormonal balance.

If you’re dealing with mood swings, acne, or bloating, a hormone imbalance might be the reason you are feeling a bit "blah". Improving your gut health can help tackle these issues since gut health and hormonal wellness are closely connected.

Gut Hormones and Health

Your body’s estrobolome processes and removes excess estrogen, preventing estrogen dominance (when your estrogen levels are too high compared to your progesterone levels). Stress, poor sleep and slow detox pathways can be the culprits of having to much estrogen in your body. A healthy estrobolome helps your body detox from excess estrogen.

Your diet and vitamin deficiencies also impact your gut health and detox pathways. To balance your hormones, you need to support your gut health.

Signs of an Unhealthy Gut

  • Hormone imbalances

  • Bloating and gas

  • Heartburn

  • Acne

  • Chronic diarrhea or constipation

  • Brain fog

  • Headaches

  • Depression and anxiety

  • Chronic fatigue

  • Struggling to loose weight

People with a less diverse microbiome often struggle with weight and mental health issues due to the gut-brain axis’s (remember the previous blog post) significant influence.

Tips for Healing Your Gut and Balancing Hormones

  1. Cut Out Sugar: Sugar disrupts the gut microbiome.

  2. Regulate Blood Sugar: Eat foods that help maintain stable blood sugar levels. Chat to me on how we can incorporate this practically into your lifestyle.

  3. Eat Fermented Foods: Incorporate probiotics from foods like plain yogurt and sauerkraut to boost gut health.

  4. Reduce Inflammation: Follow an anti-inflammatory diet, get enough sleep, exercise, and practice self-care.

  5. Limit Antibiotics: Antibiotics kill both good and bad bacteria, so use them only when necessary and consult your doctor.

Taking care of your gut can make a big difference in your overall well-being and help solve those pesky hormone-related issues!

Remember, this isn't medical advice. Always talk to a healthcare practitioner and consider looking into different probiotic brands.

*Tip: Look for a brand that includes strains of Lactobacillus bacteria.

PS: You are worthy of being HAPPY and HEALTHY!
